Daniel Summerhill is a poet and performance artist from Oakland, California. Daniel received his Associates degree in African American Studies from Laney College in 2011 and a BA in English/Philosophy from the College of Saint Rose in 2016. He is currently an MFA candidate at Pine Manor College in Boston MA.
Previously named Youth Poet Laureate, Daniel has been writing since the age of 12 and has been performing his works at colleges, universities, and venues in over 16 states since 2009. His work has appeared in Pine Hills Review, The Voice, and other journals. He published a chapbook of poems in May 2015 called Brown Boys on Stoops, and a full length collection called Crafted.
Daniel has performed along side poet greats such as Jasmine Mans, Abiodun Oyewole and others. He has also co-headlined a four-city European tour including stops such as The Hippodrome Casino and The Poets Cafe (London). He has accomplished winning several individual poetry slams such as the The Golden Gate Poetry Slam, Cypher's Inc Slam, and The Empire State Slam and was also runner-up at the Pittsfield WordXWord festival. He has made multiple appearances at the National Poetry slam and has been nominated for scholarships to both The New York State Write's Institute and Juniper's Writer's Institute.
Though Daniel has accomplished much since his inaugural year of performing in 2009, he recognizes his youthfulness in the wake of so many poets that have preceded him. However, mentor to Daniel and NAACP image award nominee, Prentice Powell said this about his work, ""He speaks with the eloquence of a man twice his age."
