Theresa Tha Songbird
Theresa tha S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. is a consummate singer-spoken word artist-performer, infusing her works with a special brand of wit, humor and soul. Writing since age 14 and singing from age 9, Theresa Tha Songbird is no stranger to the stage and an addict to creativity. Theresa began performing poetry as a teen for her High school speech team and quickly rose to become a champion competition Verse Reader. As the only black student to graduate from the 2004 Millikin University School of Music Theresa garnered tenacity in hard work and an ultimate faith in her talents. Her art is sound and word therapy. She is healing each audience member and listener with a well-tuned vibration of love through poetry and song.
Atlanta resident and Chicago native S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. is taking the world by storm as she tours her one-woman show, " B.I.R.D. is the WORD" throughout the country. Fueled by the love of creating Theresa is constantly writing and pushing her talents. She is presently producing and recording new music with her Iglootew Studios associate and producer, Terry Gordon of the Greasekydz. In becoming the primary female R& B vocalist associated with Iglootew Studios S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. has worked alongside Atlanta's underground hip-hop stars writing and guest performing on multiple projects including work with Dead Pres producer, Mike Flo. Most recently S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. has had the honor of appearing on the season 3 Finale episode of Verses and Flow engineered by Lexus on TVOne, appearing alongside CNN “Black in America” poets,
Vision and Jon Goode.
Branching off into different avenues of entertainment Theresa has been the spokesmodel for Copper Candy Jewelry Designs and Say Ashe Boutique, based out of Chicago IL, since 2011 and is currently cast as "Jazmine Love" in the spoken word/ hip-hop musical "Educated Gangster 101" written, produced by and starring HBO Def Poet Tommy Bottoms. Besides Mr. Bottoms and SONGBIRD, the cast is also comprised of HBO Def Poets Georgia Me, Malik Salaam and Abyss Graham, as well as BET Lyric Cafe's Cola Rum. In September of 2012 Theresa auditioned to become the newest touring cast member, and has recently become an associate producer, as well as musical director for H.I.P. Theater Company and The Punany Poets, run by Jessica Holter as seen on HBO, BET and Cinemax. Nothing. however, is more important than Theresa's desire to expose young minds to the world of art, as Theresa spends the school year providing Poetry writing and performing workshops to Atlanta Charter Schools and after school programs.
Vocalist, Spoken word Artist and Host, Theresa tha S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. has featured in over 70 major cities nationwide, and is expanding globally, having performed at such illustrious stages as the Indiana Historical Society, The Blue Room and American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Indiana State Museum, Cornell University, Wittenberg University, Morgan State University, Fayetteville State University, University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Cincinnati’s Arnoff Theater, Atlanta's Sweet Auburn Music Festival 2012, Baltimore's Eubie Blake and Reginald F. Lewis Museums, Verses and Flow Live Atlanta, The World Erotic Art Museum in Miami FL, Atlanta's Malcolm X Festival, and Chicago's House of Blues. Theresa has written for and appeared in 3 independent films, including a starring appearance in "Unspoken Words" under the direction of Henderson Maddox, co-starring Gregory Alan Williams, Robin Givens, Tommy Ford, and Georgia Me. She is a cast member of Coochie Chronicles, a spoken-word AIDS awareness stage play based in Cincinnati OH, and is currently touring with Georgia Me Presents, Adam’s Rib sharing the stage with the nation's BEST female poets, including the likes of Tony and Emmy award winning poet Georgia Me, Queen Sheba, Sunni Patterson, and Dana Gilmore.
